Hempcrete haven
With great pride we announce the completion of our hempcrete home.
We are overjoyed to be settled in after much planning, preparation, challenges and endless hours of hard labour. It is a great achievement to be sheltered behind walls we made ourselves - along with many sets of helping hands :) The atmosphere inside has a calming ambience attributable to the breathability, thermal and acoustic properties of hempcrete. We celebrated with a grand opening, inviting all those who that contributed to admire the completed masterpiece.
We eagerly anticipated the coldest winter night to test out the thermal properties, while it dropped to 1 degree celsius outside it stayed a cosy 16 degrees in our bedrooms with no heating. In more recent warmer weather when temperatures reached 36 degrees celsius outside, inside it remained a constant 24 degrees with no air conditioner in sight. In less extremes the internal temperature sits at a consistent and comfortable 19-21 degrees. We are extremely pleased with the performance of the hempcrete home’s insulating effect.
Air quality inside is exceptional, in fact it is comparable to fresh outdoor air. Our Air Quality Detector gave a measure of carbon dioxide (CO2) of outside air at 410-424 parts per million (ppm) and inside the main bedroom it gives a similar reading of 412-429ppm. In an average house levels range from 1,000-2,000ppm. Next we tested the indoor air in the morning after a whole evening of two people breathing out carbon dioxide with windows and doors closed. To our amazement the reading was still very low at 500ppm. Its no wonder we are getting such good sleep and our experiment demonstrates that hempcrete’s marvellous ability to absorb carbon dioxide, regulating internal temperature and air quality.
